Does China represent a genuine opportunity for Swiss and European films? How does the Chinese film market work? What are the distribution models for imported films, and what does the theatrical release process involve?

These two online sessions, organised with Chinese distributor Tian Qi, joining live from Beijing, will offer practical insights into how the Chinese market works and how international films are distributed and released in China. Drawing on his experience and several examples of films successfully distributed in China, Tian Qi will discuss the strategies behind these releases and the realities of the Chinese market.

★ With Tian Qi, a film distribution professional with more than twenty years of experience in China, founder of Hero Films and co-founder, together with filmmaker Jia Zhangke, of Unknown Pleasures Pictures, a company dedicated to acquiring and distributing international films in China.

This is an opportunity to engage directly with an experienced professional in the Chinese market and gain a better understanding of the possibilities — as well as the realities and constraints — of distributing Swiss and European films in China.

17 September — Two Films, Two Strategies: Case Studies

The second session will focus on two Swiss films: the documentary Argerich by Stéphanie Argerich and the feature film Hallo Betty by Pierre Monnard.

After watching both films, Tian Qi will assess their potential in the Chinese market and outline the distribution strategy he might consider for each: positioning, target audiences, potential partners, distribution channels, promotion, opportunities and potential obstacles.

The objective: to gain a concrete understanding of how a Chinese distributor might approach the distribution of two very different Swiss arthouse films in today’s Chinese market.
